Tattoo
One of the things I noticed when I came to Fort Lewis was the amount of tattoos you can see around campus. Fort Lewis is definitely a good example of how tattoos are now becoming a part of mainstream culture. Tattoos are no longer a sign of being a rebel or a part of the counter-culture, they are now just a way of personal expression, and ever developing art form, and many other things to many different people. The New York Times posted an article on tattoos that I enjoyed, here is a link.

The amount of people who have tattoos was one of the first things I noticed about campus when I first arrived. I think that tattoos are one of the most awesome forms of expression. They can be rebellious, religious, emotional or for any other personal reason(s). I have two tattoos myself and got mine for spiritual and personal reasons. I like to see other people's tattoos and ask about them. Some of their origins are very interesting.
Tattoos' place in the US has definatly been changing. I lived in the South Pacific for a while, where tattooing is an old tradition. Some of the folks I met down there got their tribal tattoos(moko) in the traditional method of using animal bone to inject the ink, super hardcore. Their tattoos are spiritual and part of their heritage, it seems as though we have adopted body art to create our own traditions. I love my tattoos, and talking to folks about theirs. I havn`t noticed tattoos around FLC, maybe the weather is just getting to cold.
